I.C.Y

The I.C.Y. teen program for at risk youth, 13-17 years, is a dynamic 3 day adventure and skills programme, the youth are challenged and allowed to express their struggles, frustration and pain in a non-judgemental, loving environment, an atmosphere that fosters change, growth and character development. Our aim is to run this programme quarterly.

It is a specialized programme, and different from other youth programmes as we focus on small groups of not more than 6 teens per adult. Giving them the individualised attention they need. We have discussion groups and various activities that focus on skills development. The challenge course is designed to teach the teens to problem solve; to think through a problem and execute a possible solution, it also encourages team work and trust building.

All the children come from various areas, care centres, children’s homes, informal settlements, and foster care. All with one thing in common, abuse or neglect.
All our staff are volunteers and come from all walks of life, including professional, like psychologists, nurses, teachers and social workers. The volunteers receive training and must have a valid police clearance certificate.

MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME

I.C.Y positively impact families and communities with the long term mentorship programme for abused and neglected children. The mentorship programme for children 9-12 was developed to build resilience, values and trust. An adult mentor spends a minimum of 4 hours a month with a small group of mentees, building a strong caring relationship. The mentor being a significant adult in the mentees lives develops the values of caring, commitment, respect and responsibility in a safe encouraging environment.

The teens meet on a monthly basis for 3 hours, in small groups and discuss a variety of topics, allowing them to interact socially and talk about concerns they have. They are equipped with a variety of life skills, building self-esteem and self- confidence.
